picture of Miles Davis
Miles Davis
Miles' (*1926) instrument was the trumpet which he started to play at the age of 13. Deeply inspired by his idol Charlie Parker, Davis developped his own trumpet style. Before he founded his own bands, he worked together with Parker, Benny Carter and Billy Eckstine. The 50's saw Miles in groups with Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Sony Rollins, and Cannonball Adderley. In the following years, Miles changed the musicians of his quintet and sextet very often. Tony Williams, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Sonny Stitt, Hank Mobley, to mention only a few, were members of his various groups.

In the 70's, Miles severely fell ill. When he resumed his career in the 80's, he formed new groups with young musicians such as Bill Evans, Branford Marsalis, Bob Berg, and John Scofield.

Davis' activities as an organ player are not essential. On later recordings, Miles engaged keyboard players such as Robert Irving III or Joey DeFrancesco.

Miles Davis died on 28 September 1991.
