Fred van Hove
Fred, born 1937 in Antwerpen, has studied classical piano, musical theory and harmony.
In the 50's his interest for jazz awoke when hearing music of John Coltrane.
From 1966 till 1976, he toured with Peter Brötzmann in quartet or larger groups.
Fred gave his first solo concerts at the avantgarde festival Gravensteen/Ghent in 1970
and at Jazz Middelheim in Antwerpen in 1971.
1973, Fred van Hove founded the WIM (Werkgroep Improviserende Musici), whose aim is to improve the situation of free improvised music in Belgium. In 1978, he formed a free jazz group in Belgium. Cooperations with Marc Charig, Phil Wachsmann, Paul Rutherford, Günther Sommer, Steve Lacy, Albert Mangelsdorf and many more marked his way to one of the leading piano and organ players of jazz in Belgium. In 1984, Fred initiated an interesting project: the Belgisch Pianokwartet. 4 piano players played at 2 grand pianos. Four years later, Fred played together with Annick Nozati and Johannes Bauer. This trio was enlarged to a nonet in 1991. In the time to follow, Van Hove had various cooperations with reknown musicians, also with poets and an action painter. Generally, he has been very open minded for improvisation, musical experiments as well as compositions off the known paths. Fred died in January 2022. |
